5 Easy Rules For Washing Your Face Properly
Every skincare routine starts with the most important step and that is to wash your face properly. It is key to remove dirt, oil, and makeup, without removing the skin of natural moisture. Having your face clean helps absorb active ingredients present in other skincare products that you put on after cleansing.
According to dermatologists you only need to wash your face once a day twice at the most. The best time to wash your face is at night because you need to remove the makeup, so in the morning you don’t need a thorough face washing outside of your normal showering routine.
If you come from an event where you sweat a lot or if you are wearing a lot of makeup you can add a third wash but, in most cases, this is not necessary.
You need to know that over washing your face can produce breakouts, dryness or irritation.
Why?
Because you lose natural oils and fats in the skin when you wash the face too much. This allows for debris and bacteria to enter the skin, causing infections and inflammation.
How To Properly Wash Your Face
1. Remove Makeup
Yes, it takes time to remove makeup completely, but you don’t want to use a wipe that just gets rid of the exterior dirt and remove without cleaning the skin itself.
To remove makeup gently use an oil-based cleansing balm such as Heimish All Clean Balm that will leave your skin feeling squeaky clean. This balm is designed specifically to help remove makeup, dirt, and other impurities from your skin in minutes.
How To Use It:
- Pour a small amount with spatula provided and spread balm over dry skin
- Massage balm in circular motions
- Rinse well with lukewarm water
2. Cleanse Face Using A Gentle Cleanser That Is Not Oil Based
After you remove your makeup you need to cleanse your face using a gentle cleanser that is not oil-based such as Pyunkang Yul Cleansing Foam.
Pyunkang Yul Cleansing Foam is a mild cleanser designed to unclog pores thoroughly, eliminating impurities and sebum. It is perfect for those with sensitive skin. Plus, it moisturises the skin.
This technique is called double-cleansing because you first use an oil-based cleanser or balm to remove makeup, followed by a water-based cleanser to remove any remaining dirt.
It is done this way because a gentle cleanser may not be up to the task of removing all the makeup.
3. Choose The Right Product For Your Skin Type
For Dry To Normal Skin:- Honey
- Hyaluronic acid
- Shea butter
- Glycerin
- Lipid/oils
- Ceramides
One of our favourite ones is Rohto Mentholatum Hada Labo Hyaluronic Acid Lotion that cleanses and hydrates.
For Oily Skin:
If you have oily skin, you should look for foaming or gel cleansers. It is important to choose a cleanser with non-comedogenic ingredients, so it will not clog pores. Look for the ones that contain salicylic acid if you are prone to blackheads.
A great option is COSRX Salicylic Acid Daily Gentle Cleanser that is magic if you currently suffer from acne. You can see results within 7 days.
4. Use The Right Water Temperature
Even though using hot water in the shower or washing your face feels nice it is damaging the delicate skin on your face.
Avoid washing your face with hot water as it causes dilation of blood vessels and breakage of delicate tissue. Besides, it removes the necessary oil barrier that protects the skin.
Washing your face with hot water will dry out faster and become itchy and flaky over time.
For facial washing, the best water temperature is warm. Coldwater does not effectively remove dirt.
Warm water helps loosen the dirt but preserves your skin natural hydrating oils.
5. Find The Right Moisturiser
Finally, you need to moisturise your face quickly after cleansing as the timing of your skincare steps can make a huge impact on how effective they are.
Moisturisers draw water into the skin as they have humectant ingredients. Besides applying your moisturiser while your skin is still damp from cleansing help seal that hydration into the skin.
A great option is Nature Republic Soothing and Moisture Aloe Vera 92% Soothing Gel Mist that adds moisture and hydration to dry skin and can also soothe and reduce redness in irritated skin.
